Hakodate Minato-matsuri (Hakodate Port Festival) is held in summer. Many citizens take part in parades, dancing the Ikaodori squid-dance. Large fireworks set off at the port are really worth seeing.

Located in the outer suburbs of Hakodate, Mt. Esan is an active volcano still belching gas. It rises to 618 meters above sea level. You can go up the mountain along the promenade from the parking lot to reach its peak in about one hour.

Hakodate also draws attention as home to ancient remains. The Chuku-dogu hollow clay figure made about 3500 years ago has been designated as a national treasure and is displayed in a museum.
